AWS extends EBS cloning across accounts

A new cross-account option gives cloud teams another way to refresh test environments, with encryption and cost decisions still to make.

What happened

AWS announced that Amazon EBS Volume Clones can now copy storage volumes into another AWS account. Teams can share a source volume through AWS Resource Access Manager and optionally encrypt the destination copy with a different customer-managed key. AWS presents the feature as a way to refresh development and testing environments from production data.

The copy must remain in the source volume’s Availability Zone. AWS documentation describes volume copies as crash-consistent, which means application recovery and test readiness still need validation.

BELL RIVER perspective · Editorial analysis

What it means for business

For organisations operating separate accounts for production and engineering, the change could simplify a recurring operational task. Its value should be judged by how reliably teams can provision useful test data, control access and retire copies after use. Moving a copy into another account does not itself remove sensitive information. UAE and international teams should assess the workflow against their own data-handling requirements.

  • Pilot one non-critical workload and check application recovery before expanding use.
  • Assign owners for sharing permissions, encryption keys and test-data handling.
  • Set copy-expiry rules and include cloning plus ongoing storage in the cost estimate.

AWS says the feature is available where EBS Volume Clones are supported. Confirm the target Region and current charging details before adoption. No UAE-specific availability or savings are claimed here.
