The Programmer's Next Task: Making AI-Written Code Fit Existing Systems
A generated feature must still respect old data, interfaces and business rules. Integration work gives experienced programmers a practical way to apply their knowledge as AI tools advance.
Role status: Established software integration and modernisation responsibilities applied to AI-assisted development; not a separate standardised new profession.
The feature has to fit the business
Code generation does not settle what an existing business means by an order, a cancellation or a completed payment. Our editorial view is that programmers who can connect a proposed change to those meanings have a useful direction for development. This concerns the work of integrating software, without claiming that every organisation will create new jobs for it.
Microsoft's Strangler Fig pattern describes replacing parts of an existing application gradually while the remaining system continues to operate. Its guidance stresses service boundaries, routing and dependencies between old and new components. It also identifies cases where the pattern is unsuitable, including some small systems and situations demanding rapid full retirement. [Microsoft Azure Architecture Center: Strangler Fig pattern]
Translating meaning between systems
Microsoft describes an anti-corruption layer as an adapter between systems with different data models or meanings. The adapter lets each side retain its own model. This separation has costs: additional latency, maintenance and operational responsibilities. It is an architectural option to assess, rather than an instruction to add another service everywhere. [Microsoft Azure Architecture Center: Anti-Corruption Layer pattern]
Failure behaviour also matters. AWS explains how retries can create duplicate effects when a caller does not know whether an earlier request succeeded. Its idempotent API approach uses a caller-provided request identifier to distinguish a retry from a new intention. Implementing the guarantee requires care on the service side. A fictional returns feature
In our invented example, a developer uses an assistant to draft an online returns feature for a fictional shop. The old stock system stores product variants differently from the new interface. A returned item also needs inspection before it becomes available for sale. Translating field names alone would miss the business rule.
The programmer talks through the intended workflow with a pretend warehouse owner, writes the allowed state transitions, and builds a local adapter. They simulate a timeout after the stock system accepts a return, then retry the request and check that stock is not added twice. They document which component owns each state and how discrepancies would be reconciled.
Show that you understand the boundaries
As a learning exercise, build two tiny local services with intentionally different schemas. Use invented orders, a repeat-request case and an unavailable-service case. Include a diagram, sample messages, tests and a clear explanation of how someone could return to the previous version. No live accounts or customer records are needed.
Backend, database and maintenance experience can provide a starting point. A useful next step is learning to explain API contracts, transactions and failure handling to colleagues who know the business process. AI can assist with candidate implementations; the exercise should demonstrate how you establish the required behaviour and decide whether the generated change meets it.
Three practical first steps
- Describe one workflow's states and ownership before generating its implementation.
- Practise translating two synthetic data models and testing repeated requests.
- Document failure recovery and review the proposed change with someone who understands the process.
The architecture sources describe engineering patterns, not labour-market forecasts. A local exercise cannot prove readiness for a large migration, which may require specialist operational and domain knowledge. Sources checked 13 October 2026.
