What happened

ISC2's October 16 progress update says more than 8,900 volunteers from over 150 countries have expressed interest in helping develop its AI security certification. Initial job-task workshops and a survey with more than 1,100 responses have informed the proposed scope.

The organisation is defining the knowledge and abilities needed to secure AI systems, manage AI-related threats and assess risk. It anticipates a pilot exam in late 2026, with an operational certification not expected until 2027. Final exam content and experience requirements have not yet been set.

BELL RIVER perspective · Editorial analysis

What it means for business

AI security is developing a more explicit professional identity. Practitioners can prepare by connecting existing security expertise to AI-specific system design, evaluation and governance, while checking the final requirements before planning around a credential.

  • Map your existing security skills to the AI systems you actually support.
  • Build examples of threat assessment and security testing for AI applications.
  • Follow the published exam outline when it becomes available.

The October 16 date refers to a programme progress update. This is not the launch of an available certification; its final scope and requirements remain under development.
