ILO report puts AI literacy among the foundations of future work
A joint report published on August 13 links AI adoption to changing cognitive, social and digital skills, while describing specialised AI occupations as small but rapidly growing.
What happened
The International Labour Organization published the joint report Changing landscape of skills in the age of AI on August 13. It examines how workplace AI adoption changes tasks and the cognitive, social, emotional and physical skills people use to perform them.
The report describes specialised jobs developing and maintaining AI systems as a small, rapidly growing labour-market segment. It also presents safe and ethical use of AI as a foundational capability across occupations, alongside adaptability, resilience and human agency. Its emphasis extends beyond technical skills to broader capabilities.

What it means for business
Preparation for future work should combine subject expertise with the ability to use and question AI outputs. A stronger learning plan starts with real professional tasks and identifies where human judgement, data skills and tool fluency each matter.
- Learn AI tools through tasks in a field you understand.
- Practise checking outputs against evidence and explaining your decisions.
- Keep communication, collaboration and continued learning in your development plan.
This report describes broad changes in skills. It does not establish a hiring forecast or salary premium for any particular job title.
