Google expands Knowledge Catalog support for business metric definitions
Semantic-model integrations connect existing definitions with metadata, giving data stewards a shared place to investigate conflicting metrics.
What happened
Google Cloud announced general availability of expanded semantic-model support in Knowledge Catalog on October 29. It can ingest definitions from Looker, BigQuery Graph, dbt MetricFlow, Snowflake, Databricks and SAP sources, connecting formulas and relationships with metadata rather than requiring teams to recreate their business logic.
When tools disagree about a metric, the catalog retains the definitions and their origins for data stewards to reconcile. The same context graph connects semantics with lineage and quality signals. Knowledge Studio, the interface for exploring that graph and preparing reusable context sets, remains in preview.

BELL RIVER perspective · Editorial analysis
What it means for business
Our editorial assessment is that connecting catalogs makes business judgement more visible. Data specialists still need to decide which revenue definition fits a decision, document disagreements and check whether an agent used the approved data and filters.
- Select one metric with competing departmental definitions.
- Record its formula, provenance and accountable owner.
- Compare agent answers with an approved reference calculation.
Google's internal benchmarks do not establish results for a company's data estate.
