Data Engineers: Building Reliable Inputs for Business AI
Explore the established work behind dependable data pipelines: transforming business records, testing quality, tracing their origins and recovering safely when a job fails.
Role status: Established engineering work; business AI is one application.
The role behind usable data
When a business AI assistant answers from an orders table, that table needs to be dependable. For someone exploring this work, a practical focus is learning how business records become repeatable, explainable inputs. That means understanding the journey from operational systems to the datasets people actually use.
O*NET’s U.S. profile for Data Warehousing Specialists includes sourcing, loading and transforming data; checking quality; implementing business rules; and writing tests. These established responsibilities provide a concrete starting point for understanding data engineering. [O*NET OnLine — Data Warehousing Specialists]
Transformations, checks and recovery
Quality rules turn expectations into checks. Google’s Dataform documentation describes assertions for missing required values, duplicate keys and custom conditions on rows. The engineer still has to choose rules that reflect the intended business meaning. [Google Cloud — Test data quality in Dataform]
Lineage records where data originated, where it moved and how it changed. Google’s documentation explains how this helps trace errors and assess which reports or models a change could affect. A map connecting sources and outputs gives a colleague a route for investigating an unexpected number. [Google Cloud — About data lineage]
Recovery needs deliberate design. Apache Airflow’s guidance says tasks may be retried and should produce the same outcome when rerun. It warns that repeated inserts can create duplicates and recommends reading a fixed slice of input data to keep results consistent. [Apache Airflow — Best Practices]
A fictional example: yesterday’s sales
Imagine a retailer whose AI assistant reports daily sales. Orders arrive twice after a retry, refunds come from another system, and branches close their business day in local time. A plausible answer could therefore rest on the wrong total.
In this example, the engineer documents the reporting cutoff, joins refunds using agreed keys, and checks for duplicates and missing IDs. A failed check prevents publication of the new dataset. The assistant can then show the last validated result with its timestamp and an explicit notice that the update failed. This release rule is a design choice for the example.
Transferable skills and entry routes
Our suggested learning route starts with SQL joins, keys and aggregation, followed by scripting, version control and scheduled jobs. Practise explaining a business rule precisely and turning it into a test. O*NET highlights programming, systems analysis, problem solving and written communication in this occupational area. O*NET places this related U.S. occupation in a category requiring considerable preparation, where a bachelor’s degree is common but not universal. Reconciling reports, investigating database issues or testing software can give you useful experience to develop. When reviewing vacancies, inspect the responsibilities and experience requirements; the title alone does not establish how senior a role is. [O*NET OnLine — Data Warehousing Specialists]
Build a small portfolio exercise
Create three synthetic files: orders, customers and refunds. Use fictional names, one currency and a local database. Produce a daily sales table under a documented rule for subtracting refunds. Add checks for unique order IDs, required fields and valid customer references.
Deliberately introduce a duplicate order, a missing customer reference and a late refund. Show the failure report, the correction and a rerun that does not double-count orders. Include a diagram of sources, transformations and outputs, plus a README explaining your reporting cutoff, assumptions and recovery steps. Another person should be able to reproduce both the successful run and the failures.
Three practical first steps
- Learn how business definitions become transformations and repeatable checks.
- Practise tracing a result to its source and rerunning work safely.
- Use a small synthetic portfolio to demonstrate failures, corrections and clear documentation.
