AWS moves WAF browser integration into CloudFront configuration

Automatic JavaScript SDK insertion can reduce recurring application changes for selected bot and fraud controls, with different console and API defaults.

What happened

AWS introduced automatic integration of its WAF JavaScript SDK with CloudFront on October 30. When enabled, CloudFront inserts the SDK's script into served HTML, avoiding an application release solely to add it. The SDK supplies browser signals for selected managed bot and fraud rule groups.

The setting requires a CloudFront web access control list using an eligible rule group. It defaults on for qualifying new lists created through the console, but off for programmatic creation. Existing lists retain their configuration. AWS says the automatic integration itself carries no additional charge.

BELL RIVER perspective · Editorial analysis

What it means for business

Our editorial assessment is that this shifts a maintenance task toward platform configuration. Security and web engineers should agree who owns the setting and verify it through the same deployment process used to manage the firewall.

  • Check whether the deployed rule groups qualify.
  • Make the setting explicit in infrastructure code.
  • Verify browser behaviour and Content Security Policy compatibility.

Existing SDK requirements and managed-rule charges still need checking for the intended application.
