AWS connects Step Functions workflows to AI agents as tools
Agents can select an existing workflow while Step Functions preserves its sequence, connecting AI decisions with established operations.
What happened
AWS announced on October 29 that agents can use Step Functions workflows through Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway. An agent chooses when to invoke a workflow and supplies its inputs, while Step Functions executes the defined sequence. Both existing Standard and Express workflows are supported as tools.
AWS illustrates the connection with a refund process that includes eligibility, approval and credit steps. Agents can also inspect workflow runs to help investigate failed operations. The feature follows AgentCore Gateway's regional availability, and usage remains subject to the normal Step Functions and Gateway charges.

BELL RIVER perspective · Editorial analysis
What it means for business
Our editorial view is that process analysts and automation engineers have a concrete design task here: separate a flexible request from a controlled business procedure, then define the input checks and human decisions that procedure must retain.
- Choose one workflow with clear business ownership.
- Test invalid inputs and required approval steps.
- Trace failures from agent request to workflow execution.
A predefined sequence depends on correct permissions, inputs and business rules.
