AWS KMS adds ML-KEM support for post-quantum key establishment
The update gives security teams new key-encapsulation APIs, with regional exclusions that matter for deployments in the UAE and Bahrain.
What happened
AWS announced ML-KEM support in Key Management Service on October 26. ML-KEM, standardized in NIST FIPS 203, lets two parties establish a shared secret. KMS supports its three parameter sets through encapsulation and decapsulation operations.
AWS says the corresponding private keys are protected in validated hardware security modules. The feature is available in supported KMS regions except the Middle East UAE, Middle East Bahrain and China regions, a material constraint for local architecture planning.

What it means for business
For security engineers, the useful next step is an inventory of existing key-establishment dependencies and a compatibility test, rather than treating a new API as a complete migration.
- Identify applications that depend on existing key-establishment schemes.
- Check regional availability alongside data-location requirements.
- Test client compatibility and recovery procedures in an isolated environment.
This update concerns key establishment. It does not automatically migrate an application's cryptography or make the whole system quantum-resistant.
