AWS adds backfill for existing container images in ECR

Teams can now copy an existing image catalog to configured replication destinations, addressing a gap in regional expansion and recovery preparation.

What happened

On October 26, AWS added replication backfill to Amazon Elastic Container Registry. Previously, replication covered images pushed after the configuration was enabled; older images required a separate manual step. Backfill can copy the existing catalog to configured destinations through an API call.

AWS says teams can monitor individual image results, run up to ten jobs concurrently and stop a job without removing images already copied. The capability is available wherever Amazon ECR is offered.

What it means for business

For platform engineers, this simplifies one recovery prerequisite. A complete recovery exercise must still prove that the copied application can start with its configuration and dependencies.

  • Compare required image versions with the destination catalog.
  • Investigate per-image failures before declaring replication complete.
  • Rehearse application startup in the intended recovery environment.

Copying container images alone does not replicate application data, secrets or infrastructure, and does not establish disaster-recovery readiness.
